About Raffia
James&Co uses only sustainable materials in the manufacture of our apparel and accessories. Raffia textile is a textile that is great for our bags. Plans are underway for new bags in our collection in 2025. Please contact us for more information.
Raffia textile is a material derived from the fibers of the raffia palm tree, mainly found in tropical regions of Africa (notably Madagascar) and some parts of Asia.
Sustainability:
- Raffia harvesting is sustainable, as it does not harm the palm tree, allowing it to regrow and produce multiple times annually.
- Requires no pesticides or herbicides and is considered a renewable resource.
Production Process:
- Includes harvesting, stripping fibers, drying, coloring, weaving, and finishing.
- The fibers transition from green to a sand-like earthy tone during drying and can be dyed or used in their natural state.
Attributes:
- Raffia fibers are flexible, durable, and slightly waterproof, owing to their natural resin, which prevents brittleness over time.
- It is biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable (undyed fibers are easier to recycle).
- Raffia is stronger, more pliant, and more resilient than straw, which is brittle and less versatile.
- While straw is plentiful and cheap, raffia is rarer and pricier due to its limited production areas and time-intensive weaving process.
- Used to create a variety of items such as bags, textiles, baskets, mats, hats, and bags, showcasing a rustic appearance.
- Its natural composition and eco-friendly lifecycle make raffia a favorable choice for sustainable and biodegradable products.
The material is highly valued for its unique properties and aesthetic, albeit at a higher cost compared to other organic textiles.
